Sony Xperia Z2 vs. Huawei Ascend P7: glass showdown

Sony Xperia Z2 vs. Huawei Ascend P7: glass showdown

The Sony Xperia Z2 and Huawei Ascend P7 look almost identical when looked at from a design perspective with the main differences being found underneath the hood of the devices. In our latest comparison, we take a look at and see whether the new flagship from Huawei can compete with the high-end manufacturing stemming from Japan. Let’s have a look at what the differences and similarities are between these two devices.

Design

At first glance, the Huawei Ascend P7 seems to be a an identical twin to the Sony Xperia Z2. This is further reinforced if you’re looking only at the back of the devices:  both of the manufacturers have placed the camera lens in the top left corner, the body is made of glass, and both have a brushed aluminum frame.  As well, the power buttons of both devices are found in the middle of the right hand side of the device. However, when it comes to the question as to who came to these design decisions first, the answer is clear: Sony.

In terms of finishing and material selection, both devices are pretty high in terms of quality, but the Sony Xperia Z2 has a little bit of edge on the Huawei Ascends P7. The Xperia Z2 has a solid aluminum frame and heavier chassis while the Ascend P7 has a mixture of aluminum and plastic at the top and bottom of the device. Furthermore, the P7 does win some points on being more compact, lighter, and thinner than the Z2. In a direct comparison between the two reveals that the Xperia Z2 is the much bulkier of the two.

Display

Sony has managed to eliminate a bunch of the problems that they had with their previous displays with their entry of the Z2. The Ascend P7, while attempting to their best, fall a bit short on the display side of things. When compared side to side, the differences in brightness, contrast, color reproduction, and viewing angle becomes very apparent. In this respect, the Xperia Z2 wins by a large margin.

Software

Sony’s Xperia Z2 comes loaded with the classic Xperia UI that is characterized by being a well-balanced UI with a simple interface and bright colors. While the UI doesn’t bring any ridiculously innovative features to the device, such as gesture control, it has the multimedia side of things covered with some personalized Sony apps.

The Ascend P7 is in about the same boat: there’s nothing innovative in terms of features when it comes to their UI. However, something worth noting on the P7 is that their UI has moved away from looking like a pure Android interface and more towards an iOS style. Another similarity with the P7 UI is that it shares a similar control panel.

Performance

Here is the most striking difference between the P7 and Z2: the P7 is clearly at a disadvantage when it comes to performance and speed. The Xperia Z2 offers no lagging or stuttering in every use, however, the P7 is slower can has longer waits times when switching between apps . In many cases, delays in simple options such as unlocking the screen and sliding between home screens can also produce some noticeable lag on the P7.

In the AnTuTu Benchmark comparison of the devices ranks the Z2 at around 30,000 points with the P7 coming in around 25,000, coming in behind the HTC One M7.

Camera

Again, the winner for this category goes hands-down to the Sony Xperia Z2. While both devices do offer good image quality, even in low light, the Z2 comes ahead in term of over-all quality in different settings. This isn’t to say that the Ascend P7 camera doesn’t stack up: it takes sharp images with good quality, but can’t compare to its Sony counterpart. For some more examples images that the P7 can take, check out some of the photos taken on Johannes Google+ page.

As well,  the camera software for the Xperia Z2  is more polished and offers more options, including blur effects that allow you to take tilt-shift style photos from your device. Huawei, however, has made a better go at a more functional front camera which can be used to do panoramic selfies, which the manufacturer has dubbed Groupies.

Hardware and Extras

Not to sound like a broken record, but Sony comes out ahead again. The Xperia Z2 is dust and water resistant, stereo speakers on the front of the devic, better graphics due to X-Reality, and noice-cancelling headphones. Finally, the camera comes loaded with the ability to film in 4K, offering ridiculously high quality video recording capabilities.
In contrast, the P7 doesn’t offer much. Huawei states that it is water resistant, but it has no official IP rating. The biggest selling point for hardware extras for the P7 is that the front camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels.

Conclusion

The Xperia Z2 is not only a more expensive device, but also a much better smartphone when compared to the P7. The Ascend P7 has good qualities and is a good smartphone, but lacks crucial points that would make it  clear high quality contender. A major difference between the two terminals is based on the performance of the devices and how future-proof they are. . Those who need a good smartphone will be satisfied might be satisifed with the Huawei Ascned P7, but fans of high-level smartphones will lean more towards a Z2.
