Android 4.4.2 on Samsung Galaxy S3: get an (almost) official build

Despite the cancellation of an official update to Android 4.4 for the Samsung Galaxy 3, you can still grab the latest Android 4.4.2 update for yourself. Thanks to the handy work of some folks over at the XDA Developers Forum, they’ve managed to bring port over the update from the Note 2 to the Galaxy S3. As such, we’ll show you quickly how you can install this on your device!

First, keep in mind that this is a work in progress and you’ll most likely find a few bugs with the build. Secondly, installing any custom firmware or ROM is risky and you should make sure that you backup your data beforehand. As well, this method is only compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 and you CANNOT use it with a custom kernel already installed.
To check to see if your device is compatible, head to Settings > About Device > Model Number.

With that out of the way, you can thank developers Kryten2k, arter97, forumber2, and JustArchi from the XDA Developers forum who did the grunt work of porting over the Note 2 update for the Galaxy S3. It is now moderately stable as it comes from an official firmware, but as mentioned above,  you may find some bugs and issues with it.
For those of you who still want to give it a try, you can grab the ROM here.
As well, if you’re looking for a (more) stable version of Android 4.4, you can either grabCyanogenMod 11 for the Samsung Galaxy S3 or you can grab the custom ROM yourself and follow our previous guide.
Currently, the following is working in the Android 4.4.2 ROM for the Samsung Galaxy S3.
Working:
  • Calls
  • Most sensors Proximity, Light, Gyroscope, Pressure
  • Wi-Fi
  • 3G
  • SMS / MMS
  • Camera
  • Lockscreen effects
  • Most of the apps and functions
  • Android 4.4.2
Some of the main things you should concern yourself with not working are as follows.
Not Working
  • GPS
  • Some sensors Accelerometer, Magnetic field, Orientation, Gravity
  • Rotation due to above sensors
